Many times a note is sent to let us know that the jacket did what it was donated to do, raise money to help with a medical bills, or to pay entry fee's.
Outback Trading Company donates jackets to a center for battered women and children in Philadelphia. Every year around this time an elder couple graces us, they usually bring trash bags and we stuff them full with jackets for many women and children that are without a warm jacket to wear during winter. I also must tell you that they bring $100.00 of their own money and we work with them to make their cash stretch as far as is possibly can. When they reach their limit, they smile and we fill their car and off they go to deliver another year of warm jackets to those that are without. Knowing that the jackets are truly going to make a difference in someones life is a great feeling. If you have not felt this type of elation, I challenge you to find a charity and do what you can to make a difference.
I am pleased that I can brag about what a great company Outback Trading is. More importantly it is an honor to be asked to participate in all the fundraisers and sponsorships, for a group will not include your company unless they feel what you have to offer can benefit their cause.

Ryan Wood competing at Rubicon Farm Leesburg, Virginia

Woodstock Eventing was flying high with Ryan competing at Rubicon Farm, riding a horse in every division.
He started off with his two new 4 yr olds from Ireland, controlling the Beginner Novice division with Bennett Creek Farm's, Woodstock Bennett winning and his own Woodstock Wallaby placing 3rd! Ryan and Outback have been paired in the past; it is just a relationship that works an Aussie rider and a Company that was started with apparel from the Outback. However this sponsorship is a bit different, for Ryan is now riding under his own name, Woodstock Eventing.
Ryan has come a long way from arriving in the US in 2008, to preset day, where at any one event he is riding 6 horses, has clinics on the weekends with 15 plus students. In May Ryan imported a young talent, Fernhill Classic, this horse is Ryan’s 2016 Olympic hopeful! Outback Trading is very honored to be involved with such a talented ambitious star.
When asked what he loves from the Outback apparel line, Ryan’s response, “The Oilskin lined chaps, I wear them when the weather turns cold, they are the perfect partner for the cold damp weather that comes to Pennsylvania.” While teaching at his clinics you will see Ryan sporting one of Outback’s Softshell jackets, “I love to teach in this jacket, it is great looking, fits really well, and is just the right weight, I may be on the ground, but I am still working” exclaims Wood.
For more information about the happenings with Outback Trading and Ryan Wood, friend Outback Trading on facebook, we will keep things as current as possible. Water-proof items can range from a watch, a tent , to a jacket. Each one of these items is tested to determine its' water-proof abilities. For electronics the test is called the Ingress Scale, abbreviation I.P., the rating starts at 1 and goes to 8. If a watch has the rating IPX1, you can safely say this watch is really water-resistant. When you talk about tents or clothes, waterproofing is measured on a scale called the Hydrostatic Head. If you take a piece of the material, and put a tube on top of it, the hydrostatic head rating is how much water you can fill in this tube before the pressure and weight of the water pushes through the material. Proper ‘waterproof’ levels are considered to be 1000mm (25.4 inches) of water, but most decent tents have an HH rating of over 2000mm, and a good waterproof jacket will be around 3000mm+. Outback Trading rain wear is all rated 5000mm, we are proud to boast that we are much higher than many and most companies. With a rating of 5000mm it can be said that even thru the harshest that Mother Nature can dish out Outback Trading can take it!!!

Still a few mysteries left in the world.

Summer is here and you are spending as much time as you can out in the sun, at the beach, mowing, or just hanging with friends. You made every effort to be protect yourself from the damaging effects of the sun, but is it enough. More than likely the answer is NO. To be effective in protecting yourself from UV rays you must know the lingo. Many hats today advertise UPF protective, but if you don't know what this terms mean, how are you helping yourself. UPF, stands for Ultraviolet Protection Factor. A UPF rating is granted to apparel or gear that has been tested and proven to block a certain amount of ultraviolet radiation. Like everything, there are classification categories that tell us what is good, very good, or excellent protection. An UPF rating of 50 is considered excellent, this rating will block 97.5-98% of Ultraviolet rays. If something is advertised UPF 15, this is considered good protection blocking 93-95% of UV rays. Another key factor to maximize your protection is the size of the brim of your hat. The American Cancer Society recommends a 2" brim all the way around a hat for protection. With this knowledge you now know that a baseball cap is not a sufficient source to protect you form the harmful rays of the sun. Next time you grab your sunglasses, sunblock and hat you will certainly have the knowledge to maximize your protection.

BRRRR....It's Winter time, how to prepare yourself.

In most parts of the country the weather has turned cold. The function behind each layer is very important to you staying warm and dry while in cold conditions. The base layer, is tight fitting and manages moisture. The insulating layer, does just that, insulated your body heat. The final layer, the shell, is to protect your body from the elements. I remember the say well. When we left Richmond it was a lovely fall day and a beautiful drive through the rolling hills to the races. When we all met outside the gates everyone put their picnic stuff in ,y van and one other van ( we only had 2 parking spots) and walked over. There were about 20 of us. The clouds began to move in but the outriders assured us that the weatherman had called for clear/partly cloudy skies so we unpacked everything. My then husband and I wandered over to the vendors and there was a fella with Outback Trading Oilskin. The prices were quite reasonable and we each got a Kodiak hat and me ex got a Swagman. After the fella showed us how it folded into it own pocket. Everyone was interested when we returned to our site just as the first drops of rain came down. ever hopeful we continued to enjoy food and drink and several of the group wandered back with oilskin hats. OK so the wind picked up and the rain started. I returned to get my Swagman - once again the folding was demonstrated and my ex got a long duster. It got colder and the rain poured-within an hour all of our group was draped in oilskin. The vendor sold out and packed up and went home, but we were warm and cozy in our oilskin. Horses have always been part of my life. My Sawgman has been put to the test always hanging on a hook nest to the door to the barn along with an extra lead line, a whip and my Dunhills. It still has that wonderful oilskin smell. So here is my question - how do I fold it??? Now I know I was instructed several times that rainy day but there was alcohol involved so I don't remember. I have told this oilskin story many times and when I say "it even folds up into this pocket" I am challenged and have yet to get it right over 15 years. So give an old girl a break and tell me how to fold the doggone thing. I'd also love to know what all the snaps are for if you have a diagram and perhaps a history?

World Equestrian Games...Outback Trading was there!

To the critics the cynics and all the Nay Sayers, the World Equestrian Games in Kentucky might not of lived up to the hype. The stress to perform on US soil was high, as this is the first time the games were held outside of the confined walls of Europe. Well, from my seat the only thing I saw was a whole lot of horse people spending money and enjoying the competitions. Outback Trading Company was one of the hundreds of companies that had the wonderful opportunity to peddle their wares to an audience of international consumers. It was such an awesome sight watching a gentleman from Chile trying on an oilskin duster. I did not understand his language nor did he understand mine. However, we were able to communicate. I knew he wanted to look like an American Cowboy, the oilskin duster and an oilskin hat were just what the Doctor ordered. It happened this way with many of the "out of town" consumers, our languages were different however, the end result the same. Another happy customer taking their purchase from Outback Trading to where ever in the world they call home! I am very happy to say that Outback Trading Company had a very important role in the success of South Africa's Cara Frew. Cara’s mother wondered into the Outback Trading booth in search of something to tighten up the helmet that her sponsor had purchased for her. Outback to the rescue, we were able to fit her up with some foam from the hat boxes. In all, the World Equestrian Games was certainly an event that I am very proud to say Outback Trading was a participant. Next Games are scheduled for 2014 in Normandy, France, will Outback Trading make the trip across the big pond!

Where the kangroo and Cowboy meet!

G'Day Mate! I would like to introduce a young lady that has found her niche in this world. Horses, yup like the Tom Petty song says, "loves horse's........" This young lady has made horses work within the special needs of her lifestyle. The beautiful thing about a horse is they do not judge you. Never will a horse notice if you have all the fingers that you were born without, nor will it notice if you haven't any legs. This is why the horse is the love of millions of people across the world that may have imperfections, special needs, or be lost within himself. The horse can carry the burden of all your less than perfect attributes. For this one special needs horseback rider, she has achieved when many have failed. Working day after day to attend the Special Olympics Equestrian Games. She did not just make the trip to Penn State from her home in Telford PA, to do anything other than win the Gold medal. She met her dreams and all of her hard work has paid off. Not only did she win a Gold medal, but she also was a Silver medal & a blue ribbon. She rides weekly at Ivy Hill Equestrian Center in Perkasie, Pa. Lisa Berlin is an up and coming horseman, and she has a wonderful taste for clothes. Lisa just loves Outback Trading products. It is something that is contagious both in a positive and a negative way. I do love to hear someone explain their pleasure with Outback's products. How the coat kept them dry and toasty warm, or just how wonderful they feel when they wear their favorite Outback vest. I think the absolute best is the amazement when I show the packable jacket demonstration. I think as adult persons we sometime try to crub our feelings, I say if you are happy, tell someone. If there is something you are scared about, say it. When you are amazed, let you emotions go. Next time the kid in you wants to say "Holy moly, that is way too cool," just say it. The ladies and gents were dresses for the red carpet. I was aware that a band was hired for the affair. I walked in and I spotted a member of the band wearing an oilskin duster. I had to go and chat with him and get all the dirt on him and his duster. His face lit up as he told me his duster story. Of course it is his absolute fav coat and it goes with him everywhere. One of the other band members offered some info that he maybe didn't want me to know, he stated that he even sleeps with his duster. Of course I told him that I want pictures of that! We all had a good laugh. Every time the band had a 5 min. break he would throw on his most prized possession ( his duster), walk through the sea of top hats and gowns, and out the door he went. I just love that no matter the venue, or the class of people, the Outback Duster is always in good fashion!

Vancouver Weather Man wearing Outback Duster

During the Winter Olympics the big talk was the weather. So every time you tuned in to watch there was always someone reporting what the weather was doing. Rain and warm temperatures put people in rain slickers instead of down jackets. Of course I am in the outerwear industry and I am always checking out people jackets. I was chatting with a wonderful man named Kurt, we were discussing gloves. I put the glove on my hand and stated "My hands will be cold in this glove!" He looked at me with a grimace on his face. Of course being a sheila, I had to go into great detail how when I am out fox chasing, my hands and feet just freeze. After my long detailed statement he said, "Well you need to train your hands and feet." Now I am the one with the high eyebrows! Kurt then explained how fisherman are out in the sub-zero temperatures, without gloves. How is this possible, they have trained their hands for their mission.
The technique is actually pretty simple. The objective is to train the nerves in your hands to be unresponsive the temperature changes. Not to say that you won't know the difference between hot and cold, you will. It just won't be so drastic. Place your hands in cold water for 5 minutes, remove then and place in room temperature water, again for the same time. You are to do this daily for a week. If you really want to be a superhero, you can use ice water, to room temperature water. I think that I will be using just cold water! To train the tootsies you do the same thing. I am going to give this a try, I challenge you to also join the fight against cold hands...just warm hearts!

HEY! See our oilskin collection at www.outbacktrading.com

So here's some great trivia information: What is Oilskin?

Oilskin is an impregnated cotton fabric. The cotton is very tightly woven and then immersed in a special oil bath. The hats and coats are sewn with a special non-wicking thread that is a polyester core wrapped with a cotton outer shell which absorbs the oil.

Why does Oilskin work so well? We asked Wilson King from Outback who told us:

True to the old adage "they get along like oil and water", the reason oilskin works is the oil coating will not let the water pass through the fabric. This is why oilskin works, and is the "Natural Waterproof Fabric". Cotton, as a natural fabric, does have a slight nap to it. Sometimes with heavy rains or long term exposure to rain and mist, the surface of the fabric will "wet out". Wetting out is not an indication of leaking or failure of the protection. This phenomenon also occurs with seam sealed, waterproof, breathable fabrics as they age. The wearer should not be getting wet.

After some years the oil will dissipate. Then, it is time to reproof with Ducks Back reproofing cream. It is especially important to reseal the seams of both hats and coats.

Hunting Season is now in full swing! Blend into nature with Outback Trading Company’s Camo Packable jacket and overpant featuring Mossy Oak® New Break-Up™. “ The camo packable is not just a raincoat.
